SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE     1859—1930 was a medical doctor who began writing stories while waiting for patients   Though he wrote science fiction historical novels plays and romances poetry and nonfiction he is best known for his mystery stories featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes.   His stories about Sherlock Holmes were a major innovation in crime fiction and have been translated into many languages.   In 1893, tired of writing about Sherlock Holmes, Doyle “killed” his detective in “The Final Problem,” but because of public outcry, he had to bring him back to life in his next story.
