JOSEPH LISTER
1827—1912
British surgeon who promoted
concept of sterile surgery
Became first assistant surgeon
to James Syme, a leading
surgeon
then professor of surgeryat Glasgow
Usual explanation of infection—
caused by chemicals in the air
Surgeons didn’t think
washing hands was necessary
Lister heard that Louis Pasteur
had shown rotting could occur
without oxygen
if microorganisms were present
Lister experimented
with carbolic acid
to sterilize instruments
incisions and dressings
Made surgeons wear clean gloves
and wash hands in carbolic solution
and sprayed it in operating room
and used it on instruments
Published articles on the
antiseptic principle of surgery
Contemporaries laughed at him
Took Syme’s place in Edinburgh
then to King’s College, London
Was second man in England
to operate on a brain tumor
Devised a technique for
repairing kneecaps with wire
and improved mastectomy
He was made Baron Lister
of Lyme Regis
and became one of the 12
original members
of the Order
of Merit
