Jacques Charles   1746—1823   French chemist   Developed theory of Charles’ Law   Created the first hydrogen-filled balloon in 1783   The French Academy of Sciences asked him to study the balloon built by the Mongolfier brothers   Since he couldn’t get the details from the inventors he built his own balloon   He remembered an experiment by Henry Cavendish that isolated a gas (hydrogen) 14 times lighter than air   He made a balloon 4 meters in diameter made of silk covered with rubber   It carried a load of 9kg to a high of 2 miles   It drifted out of Paris pursued by horsemen one of whom was the US ambassador to France Benjamin Franklin   He was elected to the Académie française in 1785
