Francis Crick   1916—2004   English biologist   Studied physics at University College in London   In World War II worked on magnetic and acoustic mines   Began studying biology after the war   In 1951 began working with James D. Watson at Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University   Together they developed and proposed in 1953 the helical structure of DNA   They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for this work   Crick helped lay the foundations for molecular biology   He did work on the nature of the genetic code and the mechanisms of protein synthesis   He also had great interest in human consciousness   Proposed that neuroscience now has the ability to study how brains produce conscious experiences
