Hannibal Barca   247—182 B.C.   Military leader in ancient Carthage in North Africa   Considered one of best generals in history   Famous for his achievement in the Second Punic War   Marched an army from Spain over Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy   Defeated Romans in battles at Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae (218-216 B.C.)   After these victories Romans avoided battle with him but gradually recaptured all territory he had conquered   Roman general Scipio Africanus invaded Africa in 204 forcing Hannibal to return home   Scipio defeated him in 202 at Battle of Zama   Led Carthage for several years after the war until 195 when Romans forced him into exile   Lived in Seleucid Kingdom under protection of Antiochus III   189 B.C. Romans defeated Antiochus demanded Hannibal be handed over   Went to King Prusias I of Bithynia when Romans demanded Hannibal he commited suicide in 182
