RICHARD M. NIXON   Thirty-seventh president served 1969-1974   Republican from New York   Born in 1913 died in 1994   Beat Humphrey in 1968 on two-plank platform: “law and order” at home “peace with honor” abroad.   His presidency was marked by violent demonstrations against Vietnam war.   Nixon claimed to represent the “Silent Majority,” voters who favored the war and did not protest.   Nixon finally agreed to a peace treaty that left South Vietnam without U.S. support.   Nixon and his operatives accused of breaking into offices to steal information from Democratic Party .   He resigned rather than face impeachment by Congress.   His vice-president Spiro T. Agnew resigned in an unrelated scandal.   Gerald R. Ford became vice-president.
