JOHNSON   Thirty-sixth president 1963-1969   Democrat from Texas   Born 1908 died 1973   Grew up during Great Depression   Strong believer in education and civil rights   Became president when Kennedy was killed   Campaigned on theme of a “Great Society”   A “war on poverty,” government helped support health care, education and benefits to unemployed   U.S. economy seemed healthy, people went along with Johnson’s idealistic vision.   But he spent huge amounts on military hardware and Vietnam involvement was unpopular.   Result was runaway inflation and open opposition in U.S. to the Vietnam War.   Did not run for re-election   His Vice President was Hubert Humphrey
