MILLARD FILLMORE     Born 1800 in upstate New York   Worked on his father’s farm   Grew up poor Studied and became a wealthy lawyer   Member of the House of Representatives for 8 years   In 1848, elected vice president to Zachary Taylor   Suddenly became thirteenth president from 1850-1853 when Taylor died in office   During Civil War was against Lincoln and for Johnson   As Whig party fell apart called himself a member of the American party   Slavery in new territories a big issue   Worked for compromise   Signed Fugitive Slave Act and was not re-elected   Went with South during Civil War   died 1874
