POLK     Eleventh president 1845-1849.   Democratic Party candidate   Born 1795 in North Carolina.   Studied and worked hard.   Tennessee legislature   Tennessee governor   Surprise candidate for President   Last strong President before Civil War.   Vice president was George M. Dallas.   Believed in Westward expansion.   Manifest Destiny   Wanted Texas California and Oregon   Settled on extending 49th parallel with Canada Averted war with Britain.   War with Mexico then bought California from them for $15 million in 1848.   Added much territory to the US   North and South couldn’t decide on slavery in new territories.   Died 1849 sick and exhausted.
