WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON     Became ninth president of the US in 1841.   Was Virginia planter who studied classics and history then medicine.   Received commission into the army and went to the Northwest Territory   Resigned from army in 1798.   Became Governor of Indiana Territory  in 1801 for 12 years.   Task as governor was to get title to Indian lands.   Fought against the Indian, Tecumseh, at Tippecanoe River in 1811.   Command of army in the Northwest and defeated British and Indian forces in War of 1812.   Killed Tecumseh in 1813.   Returned to civilian life.   Whigs nominated for President of US in 1840.   Pledged to follow will of people.   Nationalistic in outlook.   Died of pneumonia within 1 month on April 4, 1841.   Vice president was John Tyler.
