PETERSON GLOSSARY 1 Meaning Clusters 5-5-5: a learning format consisting of a 5-minute text reading, 5-minute Tell-Back and 5-minute fast write Listeners create memory patterns during the reading. Variations include a 2-2-5 format for very young students and non-readers. --------------- MEMORY PATTERNS: a non-linear note-taking system Create and/or write key words, phrases or symbols at various places on a sheet of paper Cluster phrases together into conceptual parts. Leave space for additional phrases as the text is read. Draw memory patterns on blank or pre-printed guide phrases sheets. Draw them on visual aids such as maps, graphs and illustrations.

Write down all the words triggered by the guide phrases. ---------------------------------------- CHORUSING/4-PEATING 3-PEATING/PHRASING: vocally repeating phrases three or four times while a recording plays Chorus before and after a reading. The 4-peat assists in memory recall by providing a pronunciation model. This reduces anxiety about verbal ability. ------------------------------------------ TELL-BACKS: Use the memory pattern as a guide. Relate the content of a reading to a partner orally. Include details.

PETERSON GLOSSARY 4 Meaning Clusters ACCELERATED THINK TANKS: A conversational or meeting technique following these simple rules: Place a concept or question before a group where each member is regarded equally. Begin with a topic or a 5 minute reading. Pass a Talking Stick around the room always to the person on the left. Only the person holding the Talking Stick may speak. Always limit remarks to two or three minutes by previous agreement. No one may speak or ask questions until they receive the Talking Stick. Group members show respect for all speakers by creating memory patterns of the entire proceeding. If a member wishes to make no comment he or she passes the stick along to the next person. Other members do not consider this to be a "cop-out".

PETERSON GLOSSARY 5 Meaning Clusters WINNING SYSTEMS: a method designed to reward desirable behaviors and ignore or delay response to undesirable behaviors -------------------------------------------------------- WRITE START: a scholarship program for 5-year-olds offered by Accelerated Schools It teaches young students basic literacy and computer keyboarding skills. Many teachers were taught a multiple reading approach to learning called SQ3R. Accelerated Thinking adds high speed input from recordings to a similar procedure. It eliminates many regressions. It avoids stumbling made by a student encountering a new or technical vocabulary. Unfamiliar vocabulary must be practiced to achieve fluency in a topic. Familiarity rapidly increases. Multiple re-statement takes place during Tell-Backs and Fast-Writes.
